As a teacher of English as a second language or foreign language, it is very significant to know various methods for effective teaching in an English language classroom. Especially, when it comes to teaching grammar. In English language teaching, there are numerous theoretical methods that have been industrialized to promote the students’ success in learning.

Well, in EFL/ESL teaching, there are two foremost theoretical methods for the presentation of new English grammar constructions or functions to students. These are the inductive approach and the deductive approach.

Understanding the Inductive Approach To Teaching English Grammar

In the inductive approach to teaching English grammar, teachers don’t teach the grammatical rules directly but let students learn them through a learning experience. For example, the learners can discover the rubrics through games, songs, or diverse activities that need the students’ engagement and communication.

Here students learn the use of the construction through the practice of the language in the background, and later understand the instructions from the practical instances. The inductive approach is usually acknowledged to be more effective in the long run than the deductive approach. Classroom activities are commonly more thought-provoking and need greater student contribution.

Nevertheless, the inductive approach is commonly recognized to be more valuable to students but it can sometimes take a little longer. Numerous traditional classrooms still rely heavily on the deductive approach. The teacher acts as the leader where the learners are at the very center of the teaching-learning development.

Major Differences Between Inductive and Deductive Teaching

Here are some of the major differences between these two methods ---

  • In the Inductive Teaching Method, the teacher's role changes to that of a guide. While in the Deductive Teaching Method, the teacher's role is front and center in class.

  • In the Inductive Teaching Method, students are given the central focus in the hopes of making the learning procedure more collaborative and effective. While in the Deductive Teaching Method, the participation of the learnersis rather limited.

  • The Inductive Method directs the inventiveness of the students by presenting the instances first and then asking them to figure out the rules or constructions from the instances. While in the Deductive Teaching scenario, the rubrics or the edifices come first and are later followed by a description with a few examples to get a clear idea of it.

  • The Inductive Method, is totally based on discovery and figuring things out. While the Deductive Teaching Method is more descriptive than based on discovery.

  • In the Inductive Method students find it easier to memorize and understand things but in the Deductive Teaching Method, it lacks full participation on the learners’ part.

  • The Inductive Method is considered one of the most effective ones as learners grow up to appreciate and enjoy the interactive nature of the teaching procedure. The Deductive Teaching Method is the most effective when used with apprentices that are already well adapted to this method of instruction.

  • The Inductive Teaching Method takes far longer and the Deductive Teaching Method is reasonably less time-consuming.

Ways To Teach English Grammar Inductively

As an ESL/EFL teacher, you do not state any rules plainly. Thus, it is essential to realise that you need to have clearly in your mind the concept which needs to be revealed. Encourage speculation. Let students be involved in observing the rule, brainstorming ideas and such like.

Provide various examples of language structures that learners should examine. It can be phrases, sentences, or short paragraphs. Let your students analyze the instances and try to prompt the instruction. This is a very significant step as apprentices try to think about the examples and prompt the patterns. You should ask your students to look at the guidelines they made in the second step and modify them. As an educator, you then need to guide them to the rule so they become aware of them.

Try to provide students with various kinds of activities to help students practice the rules in depth. You also should help students and deliver corrections whenever necessary.
