Addressing the Teacher Shortage
Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying revealed the MOE's projection for teacher recruitment during a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. The data used for this projection was based on figures from December 31 of the previous year. However, the MOE acknowledges the dynamic nature of the education landscape and will continuously review and update these projections to meet the evolving needs of the education sector.
In the meantime, the MOE has already taken action to alleviate the teacher shortage. From 2021 until January of this year, the ministry implemented a recruitment drive that resulted in the hiring of 22,327 teachers across 148 areas of specialization. This one-off recruitment exercise followed the Subject Cluster (KMP) method, ensuring that specific subject areas, such as English, Bahasa Melayu, Islamic Education, Mathematics, and History, were given priority.
Implementation of Subject Cluster (KMP) Method
The Subject Cluster (KMP) method is a strategic approach employed by the MOE to recruit teachers with specialized subject knowledge. This method allows the ministry to target specific areas where there is a shortage of qualified educators. By focusing on critical subjects, the MOE aims to enhance the quality of education provided to students.
Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying confirmed that the MOE plans to continue utilizing the KMP method to address vacancies in schools. She assured that the ministry is reviewing and refining the process by adding additional steps to further improve the recruitment procedure. While the exact details of these steps are yet to be announced, the MOE remains committed to filling vacancies with highly qualified teachers who possess the required subject expertise.
Planning To Improve Deteriorating School Buildings
In addition to addressing the teacher shortage, the MOE has also prioritized the improvement of school infrastructure. Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying highlighted the ministry's focus on upgrading or constructing new buildings for schools in dilapidated condition. Currently, a significant proportion of these schools are located in Sabah and Sarawak, accounting for almost 80% of the total number of dilapidated schools.
This emphasis on repairing and upgrading school buildings aligns with the call made by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The MOE recognizes the importance of providing a conducive learning environment for students and is actively working towards improving the conditions of schools, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak.
